The January Blues

Happy 2024 you beautiful humans.

It’s hard to believe that another year has flown by, and this January I am really feeling all the feels. I’m not sure if it’s all the noise around diet culture, the many wars we are viewing from afar, or the overwhelming feeling of mass consumption and capitalism, but it’s all getting to me. Needless to say, this year’s post holiday blues is hitting me, and it’s hitting me hard.

In the past when I have felt the internal struggles that I am currently experiencing, I‘ve turned to this little slice of the internet to share my thoughts through writing. And while some may consider the art of writing to no longer be in vogue, I think it’s about damn time that I pick it back up again. It’s cathartic for me, it allows me to reflect, and to pose questions about life. So that’s what I am doing here, putting paper to pen, well more like long fingernails to a keyboard, but you get my gist.

So let’s dive into a little deeper thought and discussion, shall we?!

Social media over consumption, inflation, and the continued rise of capitalism

I know what you’re thinking, Kat, your job is in social media and you promote brands for a living. Yes, I know. I love what I do, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I feel so incredibly grateful that I get to share my life, my outfits, my workouts through social media, and I love the small but mighty community that exists here. But I still feel conflicted, and just like many of you, I also feel the pressure to buy, buy, buy.

I get excited and inspired by other content creators and influencers and often find myself thinking oh I need that, or I should buy new clothes to inspire my community with interesting and new content. But if I am being totally honest, this just isn’t sustainable. Not for you, nor for me.

So this year I want to focus on buying less, consuming less, and sharing more of the things I already own and love in my closet. I want to share more of the everyday joys, the small wins, the mundane, the highs and the lows. Because constantly trying to keep up with trends, searching for hours on end to find the next best thing, and always trying to keep up, is quite frankly exhausting.

So this is my commitment to you all, and to myself, to spend a little less time creating things that are new, buying all the brand new items. And instead, savoring more of the old, more of the well loved, and more of the things I turn to that I already have at home.

Here’s to repeating outfits, to having dinner parties instead of going out, to thrifting and buying second hand, and to finding the friends who are willing to go on a Costco run rather than out for the night.
